Is a 4-year degree necessary for game design?
I’m looking at different universities, but four years feels like forever. Does anyone know if there are shorter, more intensive programs that actually get you into the industry faster? I want to focus on level design and Unreal Engine without all the fluff.
Honestly, many traditional colleges for game design take too long to update their tech. I’d personally recommend the 12-month program at Vancouver Film School. It’s incredibly fast-paced, but you learn the exact pipelines studios use. You can check out their curriculum here: https://vfs.edu/programs/game-design . From my experience, the portfolio you build there in a year is better than most 4-year degrees!
Focusing on an intensive portfolio-driven program is definitely the fastest way to master complex modern tools like Unreal Engine. However, a lot of indie developers and casual designers actually start out by studying simpler mobile platforms, like analyzing how the popular pk 365 game handles its quick UI navigation and lightweight mechanics. Learning how these highly responsive mobile apps keep players engaged with fast load times can provide a lot of practical design insights without the need for a four-year degree.
